This field is highly specialized and is accompanied with a series of certifications that we pay to send qualified personnel to attend. You must be adaptable, comfortable with change, able to overcome hurdles and navigate stressful situations. Some assignments involve simple installations, maintenance, and quick repairs. Other sites are complete structural renovations or remodel projects that require knowledge of multiple trade skills (e.g., carpentry, masonry, HVAC, concrete, welding, gas plumbing, etc.)

Principle Duty Title:  Service Technician Apprentice

DUTY DESCRIPTION:

Serves as an Apprentice on one of several teams of Certified Chimney Technicians within Full Service Chimney; responsible for the maintenance, accountability and utilization of all assigned equipment, while attending paid on-the-job training of the services we provide, technical skill development, and administrative activities within the organization via our Registered Apprenticeship Program.

 

AREAS OF SPECIAL EMPHASIS:

As you grow in proficiency as an Apprentice, you’ll earn industry certifications to learn the complex nuances of this specialized trade, there you will promote on to a Certified Repair Technician role. You’ll coordinate alongside other Certified Service Technicians to assist with the supervision and completion of an extensive range of repair projects.

The mission is to facilitate the smooth and expedient completion of chimney construction jobs in accordance with the highest standards of safety and craftsmanship, for every chimney we service becomes a towering beacon of professional craftsmanship for all our potential new customers to see. Your team serves a critical purpose, to help our customers and their families maintain safe, operating fireplaces and gas utility venting systems in their homes.

Once qualified and proficient, the Certified Service Technician role promotes on to a Team Leader, a project management role and assumes responsibility for the outcome of finished repair work. The Team Leader is the Subject Matter Expert, a title gained only through hard earned experience. As such, the ideal candidate for the Apprentice position will have an analytical mind with excellent communication and organizational skills. As a Team Leader, you will ensure that every job site has an adequate flow of materials and equipment to support construction projects’ timely and cost-effective completion. You must be committed to safety, familiar with business and construction procedures, and provide an outstanding experience to our customers.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Adhere to all company policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Follow instructions
  • Abide by all Safety standards
  • Read a tape measure to take measurements
  • Calculate the size and amount of material needed
  • Use hand and power tools (e.g. pneumatic drill, saws, ladder, etc.)
  • Wear PPE, climb ladders/scaffold, and work on rooftops outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Plan ahead to prevent problems and resolve any emerging ones
  • Operate and supervise the use of machinery and equipment tasks according to priorities and plans
  • Supervise and train workers and tradespeople
  • Select tools, materials and equipment and track inventory
  • Review the work progress on daily basis
  • Resolve problems when they arise and report on progress to managers
  • Coordinate and direct construction crew members
  • Be a team player with dedication to leadership, safety, and customer service
  • Coordinate a plan with a team, problem solve, and see the overall “big picture”
  • Work on scaffolding at heights for long hours
  • Natural balance and eye-hand coordination
  • Be friendly with a great deal of patience
  • Learn quickly and must be able to ask questions
  • Be teachable and able to provide skills training to new crew members

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work weekdays plus overtime
  • Ability to lift up to 60-80lbs; Good physical condition
  • Competent using standard hand or electric power tools and other equipment
  • Strong aptitude in math
  • Must be able to ask questions and accept guidance and constructive criticism
  • Excellent time management and backwards planning skills
  • Ability to plan, coordinate a plan with a team, problem solve, troubleshoot, and see the overall “big picture”
  • General sales experience or residential construction-business related experience, a plus (not required)
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication and negotiation skills
  • Proficient in English (e.g., written and verbal)
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Preferred, not required: Degree in construction management, civil engineering, building science or relevant field. – OR – Vocational Certification in a skilled trade (e.g., electrician, carpenter, mason, etc.)
  • Preferred, not required: Familiar with laying courses of brick and block, mixing mortar and cement, and knowledgeable of safety practices for both masonry equipment and scaffolding
