The VA Service Dog Veterinary Health Benefit provides insurance coverage for veterinary health care of guide or service dogs prescribed to eligible Veterans. It serves Veterans enrolled in VA health care with diagnosed visual, hearing, or substantial mobility impairments (including mental health-related) who receive a clinical determination that a service dog is optimal. The dog must be trained by an accredited organization. Veterans meet with their VA Clinical Care Provider or Mental Health Provider for evaluation; if approved, the local Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service coordinates the benefit including insurance premiums and coverage for medically necessary treatments.
